If you have a rich content site and you generate traffic from it, it is advised that you don’t just waste all the traffic that stumble on your site as result of your marketing effort, you should offer them alternatives if they are not looking for what you are offering. You use the affiliate programs as a second income generating avenue besides your primary focus i.e. your products and services. But you must make sure these ones are not competing merchant or you‘ll be asking your visitor to buy from your competitors rather than from your website.

Well, maybe they have slightly different needs. Perhaps they are looking for a lower-cost option or they are “just looking, thanks.” There are any number of possibilities why a visitor may not be an ideal candidate for your service.
You could, if you wished, let those visitors proceed merrily on their way. But why would you? After all, you worked very hard to get them here, right? So why not make recommendations for niche-related, non-competing products and/or services that may be more suited to the needs of those visitors? That way, your traffic is not wasted. Instead, it supports an additional revenue stream.
Do a proper research on five to ten non-competing but closely related website and join their programs. You will be amaze how much you can generate as secondary income stream.
